This isn’t a tour of Lisbon. We won't be covering ground, ticking off viewpoints, or collecting tiles as proof. The game is different this time: we stay in one place long enough for it to stop performing for us, and then we photograph what’s actually there.

Lisbon produces a specific visual restlessness. The light off the Tagus hits everything sideways. The architecture can’t decide what century it wants to be. The people carry something you can feel before you can name it. It’s not atmosphere, it’s more subject matter.

What Lisbon gives us specifically: streets that change character every fifty meters, swinging between the monumental and the intimate without warning. Tiled walls that are archives of weather and time, not decoration. Faces shaped by a city that’s been simultaneously proud and peripheral for three hundred years. And the October light: Atlantic, oblique, warm and slightly resigned, unlike anything we photograph in the rest of Europe.

We named this trip after a film. In 1994, Wim Wenders came to Lisbon to make a movie about a sound engineer who falls in love with what the city sounds like. He never left on schedule. We understand that completely. We don't know what you'll discover here. We only know that five days is enough time to stop being a visitor. The questions start on day one. The photographs that answer them arrive, honestly, a few months later, when we sit down with the prints.
